Penner s The Lost Apothecary is a spellbinding novel pardon the pun told in dual perspectives The first is the apothecary owner a woman who has made it her life s work to craft poisons but only for women to exact revenge on men who have scorned them in some way The owner keeps a detailed exact revenge on men who have scorned them in some way The owner keeps a detailed book of these concoctions and their unfortunate recipients The second perspective is of a woman in the present day who happens upon one of the original apothecary bottles and begins to dig into the history of the hidden shop and it s mysterious owner This is a welcome distraction as she too is running from her own cheating spouse The two women s stories collide in a wonderfully written heart wrenching novel Penner does a fantastic ob of weaving both of the tales so seamlessly as well as meticulously researching the time periods that you truly feel that you re in the novel with the characters I couldn t put this one down and I don t think you will be able to either I absolutely loved this book The dual timelines Intertwined Beautifully And I Loved beautifully and I loved main characters The characters were relatable The mystery mixed with a little bit of romance kept me guessing and turning the pages There was never a dull moment in the book kept me guessing and turning the pages There was never a dull moment in the book dislike novels where you are told well ust get through the first half and then it gets better The Lost apothecary is not of those It gets you hooked from the very begining Penner s descriptions of old London are historically accurate and detailed enough so you can really envision the scenes but not so detailed where you get lost in the description This book is perfect for avid and casual readers I m eager to read from this author Eliza Nella and Caroline three different women three different storylines that converge in dramatic can t put your book down ways The Lost Apothecary starts off in 18th century London set along the cobble stone streets of a hidden apothecary shop where owner Nella creates concoctions for women wishing to fulfill dark desires As we dive further into the book we re introduced to Eliza a spunky uick witted 11 year old who seeks to learn Nella s secrets Then we ump to present day where we meet Caroline an American who is looking for an escape She ets off to London and finds herself in back in 18th century London with Nella Eliza and the unsolved apothecary murders Filled with murder intrigue and scandal The Lost Apothecary is a can t miss read that will leave you turning the page long after you should have shut off your light and gone to bed Few stories take less than a page to lock me in their grasp but The Lost Apothecary was certainly one of the few I was taken instantly into the depths of 18th Century London and I mean the depths to discover a woman who chooses a dangerous path not for her own benefit but because of her own pain and with an unsolicited assistant amid much misgivings Concurrently we meet another woman whose pain brings her to the same London but in the modern day As she unearths secrets long buried in the Thames the strength and courage of these women converge as they.
