Merely the excuse for some class and employer conflict as Callimachus boss tries to suppress him to save his own job Despite the opportunities to explore the technology and nature of Byzantine nventors we re left with another clich d corrupt nobleman story that has very little new to say When Greek Fire s actually used t s n the
*LAST CHAPTER OF THE BOOK AND WHILE THE DESCRIPTION *chapter of the book and while the description good t s very brief and perfunctory The mperial princess plot s handled better as The Racehorse Who Disappeared it s given time but since our only POV characters Anna the girl s mother we never really go nto depth here either Instead we skip ahead two years and spend the last few chapters safely free from having to witness the actual drama that was the driving thrust of the first half Wouldn t want a reason to actually careI appreciate some of the thought that went nto this and the uniue choice of topics but Ich werde hier sein im Sonnenschein und im Schatten in general this book gives us little reason to care about the characters or the plot It s unfocused with Greek Fire being used as a catalyst to tie some otherwise tricky plot threads together Despite the uniue setting the plot seems clich d and unimaginative I thinkts worst sin though Sutherlands Rules isntroducing plot elements and emotional journeys that t never follows through on Most notably the way n which the main conflict of the first half of the novel her fears of her daughter being stolen from her by the An Officer and a Gentleman (A Chronicles of the Pneumatic Zeppelin Story) imperial familys basically gnored n the second half She s just content with Trafiquants et navigateurs sur le Bas-Danube et dans le Pont Gauche a l'epoque romaine (Philippika - marburger altertumskundliche abhandlungen) (German Edition) it now and so s her daughter Thiss just lazy writing and I don t get why When Dimple Met Rishi it had to be this way If you want to tell the story of anllegitimate offspring of the Monstrous Regiment (Discworld, imperial line then commit to that If you don t then focus on something else Just because a novel s setn the Byzantine empire doesn t mean t needs to focus on byzantine machinations Particularly not when the author seems generally uninterested n them so far Night Watch i m notnto this bookusually there End of Day is a real depth to her characters that seems to be missingn this book Rethinking Us Election Law: Unskewing the System Through Law and Politics i m disappointed because ve really enjoyed the last 3 bradshaw books that Scenery, Set, and Staging in the Italian Renaissance: Studies in the Practice of Theatre i ve read maybet will get betteri m on page 100 One of the best historical fiction authors This Israel! Do You Know? is about thenvention of Greek Fire and so much Gillian Bradshaw s one of my favorite historical fiction writers so I look forward eagerly to new books from her Sadly
Alchemy Of Fire Was Disappointment And I Say That of Fire was a disappointment and I say that great reluctance Set Constantinople n the 7th century CE Serpico it tells the story of Anna a perfume maker whose daughters the product of Anna s union with the now dead brother to an emperor and of Kallinikos a Syrian who has fled to Constantinople to escape the Arab nvasion and s now working on a secret weapon with which to fight the ArabsBradshaw Truyol Y Serra's Doctrines of International Law is usually skilled at bringing other times and cultures to lifen her fiction but this time the characters and setting fail to come completely alive The dialogue s wooden and filled with talics so many that I counted nineteen Globalization, Sports Law and Labour Mobility: The Case of Professional Baseball in the United States and Japan italicized words on two consecutive pages at one point and I never really cared about the characters or the plots they were caught upn Having been reading lately about medieval Islam I was Competitive People Strategy: How to Attract, Develop and Retain the Staff You Need for Business Success intrigued to see what Bradshaw might make ofts clash with Byzantium but unfortunately the answer was not much Skip this and go read The Beacon at Alexandria Strategies for Minimizing Risk Under the Foreign Corrupt Practices ACT and Related Laws insteadf you haven t read Bradshaw before You ll get a much better sense of what she can do with historical fiction. Out her daughter The International Law of Biotechnology: Human Rights, Trade, Patents, Health and the Environment is forcednto the open Anna must accept huge upheaval and recognize her feelings for Kalliniko. I really like Gillian Bradshaw but
*I THINK I VE READ TOO *think I ve read too of her books I found this novel completely predictable The characters beautiful ndependent business woman and nerdy scientist love Dungeons and Desktops: The History of Computer Role-Playing Games interest weredentical to those that have appeared Let's Talk 3 Student's Book in her other historical novels The plot didn t have any twists or surprises and the setting of Constantinople didn t really shine through as vividly as some of Bradshaw s other venues So a nice read but not uite as enjoyable as I was hoping If Bradshaw spent time onmbuing her characters with the life and culture of the period and
